Sheila Underwood, Central Coast artist, became serious about her art after retiring from a long career as an interior designer. Impressionistic best describes her style, painting with large brushes and “juicy” paint. The flow and spontaneity of watercolor is a perfect medium for her dynamic florals and still lifes.
Some paintings are started with a definite plan, a sketch, maybe some reference photos or painting from life. Other works begin with splashes of color and play, just letting the paint flow, which will begin to set a mood and suggest objects such as rocks, water, leaves. “These are the things that keep me excited and anxious to paint each day.”
When asked what inspires her, Sheila explains, “I’m inspired easily by a stroll through a garden or a walk on the beach. It doesn’t take much to stir my soul.” Living on the Central Coast, seascapes and vineyards are just calling her to paint!!

Sheila is also a silk painter. Silk painting requires more planning. Silk is stretched onto a wooden frame and the design is drawn with a resist. Silk dye is used which requires steaming to set. The dyes flow and spread and do beautiful and exciting things. Silk paintings are framed like a watercolor with mats and glass.
Sheila continues her study of art through workshops and seminars studying with many acclaimed artists. Her work can be seen at Gallery Los Olivos in Los Olivos, CA, or at her Nipomo studio.
